Adding a chord
Although the Pitch Palette Chord Detector contains more than 1,500 chords,
you may want to add some more. You can do so by following these steps:
- Play the chord on a MIDI keyboard, on a MIDI guitar controller or
on The Piano keyboard. The mini piano
keyboard on the right side of the Chord Detector screen will light up the
notes you have played. All chord inversions will appear the same on this mini-keyboard.
- Sustain the chord using a sustain pedal or by clicking the Hold light
below the mini-piano keyboard.
- Name the chord by using the spin buttons on the left side of the
four rows to select the tonic of the chord. If you were adding a Bbm7, you
would click the spin button until you find "Bb". Then click your
mouse on the right-hand side of the tonic you just selected and type in the
rest of the chord name "m7".
- Root the Chord by using the spin buttons on the left side of the
screen underneath the word "Root." Use the option buttons to indicate
whether this Root should be recorded for this scale only or for all scales.
If this is a new Chord, the best choice would be to Root it for all scales
for now. You can always change the Root of this Chord for any scale at any
time.
Select the ET Root if you want to toggle back to the equal tempered scale
for this chord only (for example: diminished chords).
- Save the Chord and its Root by clicking on the Save button. In this
example, the Bbm7 Chord will be transposed and saved as a Bbm7, Bm7, Cm7,
C#m7, Dm7, Ebm7, Em7, Fm7, F#m7, Gm7, Abm7 and Am7. The Root you selected
will also be transposed. If you chose to Root the Bbm7 in Db, then the Bm7
will be rooted in D and so on.
